B2B technology marketers have unique website requirements, and finding a platform that suits your needs will be absolutely critical to building a website that scales with your brand. We’ll give you an honest look at when Wix is a good fit and when it won’t get the job done for your brand.

If you’re just here for the comparison table, click here to jump to the table.

What is Wix?

Wix is a point and click, low-code platform that is ideal for companies looking for an affordable “starter” website. Their pricing is highly transparent, plenty of designers and developers are familiar with the platform, and it’s easy to develop a functioning website with minimal technical skills if you use one of their templates. However, (and we’ll put this as delicately as possible) their designs are pretty plain and we recommend testing them extensively to ensure responsiveness.

What is Wix Studio?

Wix Studio is Wix’s alternative to Webflow’s solution, aimed for agencies and enterprises that require customization. A “starter” point and click website won’t cut it for the Wix Studio crowd. Wix Studio includes the ability to add custom CSS, JS and even collections (or CMS capability).

Wix Studio is a completely different product that is used by technical designers and developers to create websites.

What is Velo (Wix Code)?

Wix and Wix Studio can be used to create standard website pages and Wix Studio allows customized web pages. External integrations and custom APIs are not supported with Wix or Wix Studio (you can’t use integrations to a careers platform, get data from external sources, integrate with marketing automation systems, etc.). The add-on Velo (Wix Code) is a developer tool running on Node.js with the ability to create custom Wix Apps to integrate with your Wix website.

What is Wix Enterprise?

Wix Enterprise is a suite of solutions provided by Wix to big corporations that have custom security requirements and supports minisites based on specific templates (with limitations). Think of a real estate corporation creating sites for each real estate agent or a training agency creating a stand-alone website per course.

What is WordPress?

WordPress is a different beast. It’s versatile, integrates with countless tools, and is extremely powerful. WordPress is an open source framework that is fully open for anyone to use and extend for free (based on the GPL license). However, the core framework is only the shell of a website without a ton of development or a layered design tool or extended themes.

WordPress is also a code base. Without Airfleet, customers need to consider domain management, hosting setup and maintenance, and security and version management. B2B technology companies that go this route will need to source a developer or agency that can provide a design layer and purchase a content management system that is more robust than the WordPress default blog.

What is WordPress VIP (WordPress.com)?

WordPress VIP is a premium hosting solution for big businesses that takes care of the complete infrastructure, scaling, deployment, monitoring, and security of WordPress. While WordPress VIP is a closed platform, unlike WordPress, it still offers most of the flexibility and customization WordPress is known for. WordPress VIP comes with pre-installed premium themes that are built for corporations.

However, WordPress VIP will still require custom development if you want customization and integrations. You won’t be able to create a website without a designer and developer, assuming you want features outside of what’s built into the templates.

What is WordPress with Airfleet?

Airfleet is both a professional services company and a platform. Airfleet has developed a website platform that sits atop WordPress. Our embedded tools are specifically developed for B2B technology marketers. We’ve also developed a CMS that is made just for B2B technology marketers.

Usually, we handle design and any technical setup our customers need. For marketers who would like a beautiful, responsive website without the operational overhead of managing versions or analytics setup, we offer the best of both worlds.

When is Wix better than WordPress with Airfleet?

Do you care more about cost savings than first impressions? Are you not sold on the value of visual identity and branding? Do you want to avoid spending money on a marketer or marketing contractors like designers, developers, and content marketers?

Wix is generally best for those who are looking for an easy-to-use platform that allows them to create a basic website. If you’re a scrappy company just exiting your stealth round and not ready to hire a marketer, Wix is an acceptable solution.

When is WordPress with Airfleet better than Wix?

Have you invested in marketing? Are you willing to invest in marketing? Have you honed your message and developed a content marketing operation? Do you have a visual identity for your brand or are you willing to invest in developing a unique look and feel?

WordPress is great for businesses looking for a more flexible and refined website that allows for full control and customization. It is particularly well suited for businesses with a robust content marketing strategy that want a CMS that offers complete control over design and functionality. Airfleet can help you with visual identity, technical setup, ongoing maintenance, and analytics as much or as little as you would like.

As of the summer of 2024, Wix has 3.5% of the market share and WordPress has 65.3%. The more compelling statistic is the share of top 1,000 performing websites: 47.3% were developed on WordPress and 0.3% were developed on Wix.

Wix is growing at a faster rate than WordPress, but technical developers and designers still overwhelmingly prefer WordPress for its flexibility and customization.
